Encountering the message “Are you sure you want to do this?” while installing a theme via the WordPress theme installer? This often indicates that your web server is configured with PHP settings that restrict the size of ZIP files uploadable via WP admin.

Most hosting companies set a maximum file upload size limit, typically around 8-10 MB or even less. Consequently, if you receive this error, your web server is rejecting the upload due to the theme zip file’s overall size. Despite the unclear error message from WordPress, this is not a theme-related issue or a bug.

Solving the Issue:

Here are two solutions to resolve this problem:

  1. Increase PHP Limits with Web Host Support:
    • Contact your web hosting provider and request an increase in your PHP limits, allowing a larger zip file to be uploaded. They will guide you on adjusting the necessary limits to address this issue.
  2. Upload via FTP or WP File Manager Plugin:
    • Upload your theme via FTP, a simple and efficient alternative.
    • Alternatively, you can install the theme using the file manager plugin.

By implementing these solutions, you’ll overcome the upload size limitation and successfully install your desired theme without encountering the ambiguous error message.
